COVID-19 PANDEMIC

As COVID-19 was declared a public health crisis, local news was tasked with keeping our community informed and safe during the most uncertain time in our lives. As a digital journalist, I delivered developing news in real-time including: the first COVID-19 positive cases in Central Texas, coverage on Governor Greg Abbott’s COVID press conferences, and local and state shutdowns. I also wrote content for our Rebound series, focusing on bringing COVID relief resources to Central Texas.

PROTEST COVERAGE

In addition to the pandemic gripping the nation, the death of Texas-native George Floyd re-ignited the Black Lives Matter movement resulting in protests nationwide against police brutality. Locally, protests in honor of Vanessa Guillen, a Fort Hood soldier who was killed on base, and Michael Dean, an unarmed Black man who was killed by a Temple Police officer during a traffic stop, took place. I assigned reporters to attend local protests, livestreamed demonstrations and marches, produced real time digital content for social media and was the first journalist to pursue and report on Guillen’s missing case.

Our digital coverage, both nationally and locally, was wall-to-wall and real-time.
